An image of a black bamboo garden served as inspiration for the guardrail and sculptural rod cluster designs we developed for the 1900 Market St atrium project. This bamboo variety was installed in a long narrow planter along one edge of the atrium’s floor opening. The tall linear planting group presents a slightly regimented character, while the bamboo stems lean out of position and overlap randomly.

The design team picked up on this characteristic when conceiving the guardrail design. Each individual steel rod is cantilevered from the floor slab. The height of the pickets varies from one to the next and occasionally the rods step laterally out of position. Their finishes (like the tower sculpture) incorporate both blackened steel and stainless steel.

A similar expression was used in the design of the taller steel rod clusters. These groupings of rods are placed at certain intervals around the atrium. They provide another strong vertical presence in the atrium while defining intimate seating areas and pathways. In one case a rod cluster rises 25ft and punctures a mezzanine floor level, referencing how bamboo can be difficult to control once planted.

Communicating Stair Design

With a goal of establishing a central hub of activity, the design team created a series of new floor openings and a custom-designed stair as a means of connecting teams on adjacent floors. Notable for its fully cantilevered blackened bronze treads and intermediate landings, the stair is an engineering feat. A winding internal ribbon of oak panels provides concealed support for the stair treads while a custom-designed light fixture accentuates the verticality of the new stair openings.

Retail malls are exploring new leasing strategies as a means of stabilizing their tenant base during turbulent economic cycles. In one recent example PREIT has begun to reposition portions of their Exton Square Mall (Exton, PA) for leasing to medical office users and other compatible tenants whose businesses are focused on health and wellness themes. Following a successful lease transaction with Main Line Health, PREIT and their broker Stockton Real Estate Advisors hired Granum A/I to create large scale graphic designs for temporary construction barriers surrounding the Main Line Health suite which is now under construction. The graphic walls help to communicate the goal of establishing a new “health and wellness center” within the Mall and will be removed as tenant spaces are occupied.

This brand will not only serve to distinguish this portion of the mall property from the retail-oriented section of the mall, but will serve as a springboard to replicate this concept at other PREIT properties. With a focus on Health and Wellness, large scale graphics were designed to support this new objective. Text and phrases were incorporated into the design to also promote this motif. Large graphics of natural landscape and textures coupled with natural yellows, greens and oranges were used to further the sense of comfort and relaxation.

In addition to these large scale graphics, we took advantage of the full height walls to create a full scale perspective rendering that could help other organizations visualize their space in the mall. We envisioned a retail environment that integrated both a yoga studio and a skincare/health retail space to bind together the two different sections of the mall, retail and healthcare/wellness.

Boardroom Table Design

Novo nordisk North American Headquarters, Princeton, NJ

Acting as a full service interior designer for Novo Nordisk’s North American Headquarters in Princeton, NJ, Granum A/I was given an interesting opportunity to design the company’s 24-person board room table. With Novo Nordisk being a world leader in diabetes-related research and treatment we wanted to create a custom table design that reflected their work in the pharmaceutical industry.

Design of the table's supporting structure and decorative inlay is inspired by the insulin molecular chain. The table’s support frame, although simple in plan, consists of an intricate combination of three repeating component parts. This kit-of-parts structural concept aided fabrication and installation of the large table.
