As part of the new Subaru of America Headquarters campus in Camden, the National Service Training Center was a critical element to the move. Its multiple functions were previously spread out over three leased and owned buildings, all a drive from the headquarters. This led to inefficiencies, difficulties in coordinating visits by Subaru leadership, and a loss of synergy with other departments. With access via a connected pedestrian bridge, there is a daily flow of staff between the headquarters and Training Center and a renewed feeling of collectiveness.

The facility holds a number of functions. These break down into office, technical, and warehouse. The office portion includes meeting, huddle, and focus rooms as well as an open office plan similar to the headquarters. The upper level is home to sales support and management personnel. The ground floor houses staff responsible for developing the curriculum used at the regional training centers to teach technicians how to service the cars. It is immediately adjacent to a lab space where the staff has access to the latest vehicles and technology to find the best practices in servicing the vehicles. This lab space also has two classrooms for teaching senior maintenance staff from around the country with large garage doors opening out onto the lab that allows cars to be driven into the classrooms. Equipped with short throw projectors and whiteboards, the immediate access to a vehicle while showing on screen schematics facilitates better learning for the student.

 

There are a number of technical spaces in addition to the training development space. A full-service shop with in-ground lifts has 21 bays for servicing Subaru vehicles. A critical element to the design of this space was the ability to expand. This required installation of infrastructure for in-ground lifts that will bring the space to a total of 32 bays when determined to be necessary.

 

The shop primarily services Subaru’s vehicle fleet but also services any employee’s personally owned Subaru. Adjacent to this space are eight car bays dedicated to engineering support including space to study add-on accessories and products new to the market. To support this study, these spaces have two saw-tooth type skylights on the roof which connect directly to the observation portion of these spaces. In support of both office and technical spaces are large warehouse spaces. The shop has a dedicated parts storage space with three tier high racks that defined the minimum clear height to underside of structure for the building. Adjacent to it is another large warehouse space used for housing materials supporting headquarters operations. These include marketing collateral, records, and building materials.
